VNeID: Vietnam's Electronic Identification and Authentication Application
The VNeID application, developed by the National Population Data Center under Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security, leverages population data to facilitate electronic identification and authentication. This app is designed for individuals residing in or traveling within Vietnam, offering a digital alternative to traditional paperwork and aiding in the development of digital citizenship, government, and society.
VNeID serves multiple crucial functions, including the digital identification of citizens, streamlining medical reporting, and facilitating swift domestic travel declarations. Additionally, it plays a vital role in tracking secondary COVID-19 infections, enabling timely notifications to the public and assisting authorities in their efforts to control the spread of the virus.
Access Permissions
By using the VNeID application, users consent to the following access permissions:
- Internet Access: The application requires internet connectivity from the user's device to function properly.
- Camera Access: The camera is used to scan the QR code on the Citizen Identification Card (CCCD), simplifying the input of basic citizen information and enabling quick scans for travel and medical declarations at designated points.
- Media and File Access: The app accesses photos, videos, audios, and files to store QR code images, which are necessary for inspections at citizen checkpoints.
- Notification Permissions: The application sends notifications to the user's device to keep them informed.
Personal Information Collection
Users are required to input personal data, including medical and travel information, either for themselves or on behalf of others with their consent. The collected personal information includes full name, phone number, citizen identification, gender, year of birth, permanent address, nationality, health status, travel details such as departure and destination points, vehicle number plate, and any exposure to individuals with COVID-19. All information is entered into forms and submitted with the user's explicit permission.
Users bear full responsibility for the accuracy and legality of the information they provide.
Privacy and Copyright Protection
The National Population Data Center, under the Ministry of Public Security, ensures the security and privacy of user data. This information is used solely for the prevention and control of COVID-19, to protect public health, and is not utilized for commercial purposes or to invade personal privacy. Data may be shared with health authorities and other relevant entities to enhance the effectiveness of disease prevention measures.
The application developer commits to not collecting or using user information for any purposes other than those stated. Furthermore, no information will be disclosed that could harm users or breach their privacy, in accordance with Vietnamese law and the application's policy.
- No Location Tracking: VNeID does not collect any data regarding users' locations.
- Anonymity: Users remain anonymous within the community. Only competent authorities can identify individuals infected with or suspected of being infected with COVID-19 due to close contact, for the purpose of tracing and containment.
