Investigating vehicle collisions just got easier with the EDR "Blackbox" Scan Tool and PDF Accident Reports offered by Collision Sciences. Our CrashScan app, used with the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, allows you to efficiently scan a vehicle's computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR) where supported (see vehicle support below). This streamlined process helps investigators quickly identify, capture, and interpret crucial accident data stored within the vehicle's system. This data is invaluable for verifying insurance claims and providing key insights into liability or questionable collision claims.
Vehicle Support (EDR & Full System Diagnostic Scan)
CrashScan supports over 3000 unique vehicle year/make/model combinations internationally. Confirm support for your specific vehicle here: https://collisionsciences.ca/reports/check_support/
Contextual Accident Reports
A successful CrashScan provides a detailed report outlining impact severity, orientation (front, rear, or side), and crucial contextual information, including:
- Accident severity classification (minor, moderate, or severe)
- EDR trigger threshold information
- 5 seconds of pre-crash data: speed, brake pedal and accelerator pedal use, and steering input
- Number of occupants and seatbelt status
- Estimated damage repair cost
- Indication of potential structural crush damage
- Injury risk thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)
- G-force context compared to daily activities
*Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration values, scientific literature, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

Privacy Legislation Regarding EDR Data
Canada: Currently, no specific legislation governs EDR data; it's considered diagnostic and non-private. However, obtaining consent from vehicle owners is considered best practice among insurers.
United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, along with statutes in seventeen states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington), place limitations on EDR data retrieval and generally require owner/lessee consent for access, with certain exceptions.
End-User Consent
By downloading the CrashScan app, you consent to its installation, future updates, and data collection practices as outlined in our privacy statement. You can withdraw consent at any time by uninstalling the app. For more information, please visit CollisionSciences.ca.
