Localthunk, the creative force behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, recently intervened to address a controversy sparked in the game's subreddit concerning AI-generated art. The situation unfolded after DrTankHead, a former moderator of the Balatro subreddit and current moderator of a related NSFW subreddit, publicly stated that AI art would not be banned on the subreddits, provided it was properly labeled. DrTankHead claimed this decision followed discussions with Playstack, Balatro's publisher.
However, Localthunk quickly clarified their stance on Bluesky, firmly opposing the use of AI-generated imagery. The developer followed up with a comprehensive statement on the subreddit, denouncing AI "art" and emphasizing their commitment to supporting real artists. Localthunk confirmed that neither they nor Playstack condone AI art and that DrTankHead had been removed from the moderation team. Moving forward, the subreddit would not allow AI-generated images, with plans to update the rules and FAQ to reflect this policy.
In response, Playstack's communications director acknowledged that the existing rule against "unlabeled AI content" might have been misinterpreted. The mod team plans to clarify this in the future to prevent similar misunderstandings.
DrTankHead, after being removed as a moderator of r/Balatro, addressed the community on the NSFW Balatro subreddit. They clarified that they do not intend to make the subreddit focused on AI art but are considering dedicating a specific day for posting non-NSFW AI-generated art.
The incident reflects broader tensions within the gaming and entertainment industries regarding generative AI. Amidst widespread layoffs, AI has been criticized for ethical and rights concerns, as well as its inability to create engaging content. For example, Keywords Studios' attempt to develop a game entirely using AI failed, with the company acknowledging AI's limitations in replacing human talent. Despite these setbacks, major companies like EA, Capcom, and Activision continue to explore AI's potential, with EA declaring AI central to its business, Capcom experimenting with it for generating game environments, and Activision using it for assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
