Corinne Busche, director of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is reportedly departing from BioWare, an EA subsidiary.
Eurogamer reported Busche's upcoming departure, noting her tenure as game director from February 2022 until the game's launch last year. IGN has reached out to EA for comment.
The commercial success of Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been a subject of discussion since its October release. Eurogamer stated that Busche's departure is an isolated event and doesn't signify broader studio restructuring.
Busche joined BioWare in 2019, following a period at Maxis where she contributed to various Sims projects. Her role in guiding Dragon Age: The Veilguard to completion during its final development stages was significant, as detailed in IGN's article, "How BioWare Finally Got Dragon Age to the Finish Line After a Tumultuous Decade," which highlighted the game's extensive, near-decade-long development process, including a major overhaul from a planned multiplayer game to a single-player RPG.
Eurogamer's report suggests Busche's exit is unrelated to the game's sales performance. EA's official stance on whether sales met expectations remains pending; their Q3 2025 financial results are anticipated on February 4th.
BioWare has confirmed the absence of any planned DLC for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, shifting its focus to Mass Effect 5, a project previously teased but yet to be fully unveiled.
In August 2023, coinciding with the release of Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3, BioWare implemented layoffs affecting approximately 50 employees, including veteran narrative designer Mary Kirby.
These layoffs occurred amidst internal restructuring at EA, effectively dividing the company into sports and non-sports sectors. That summer, rumors circulated within BioWare regarding a potential acquisition. The decision to transition Star Wars: The Old Republic to a third-party publisher was reportedly made to allow BioWare to concentrate on Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
BioWare's journey with Dragon Age continued with the game's 2024 reveal, which initially received negative feedback, prompting the studio to quickly release gameplay footage to appease fans. The name change from Dreadwolf to The Veilguard also drew criticism. Despite the initial backlash, subsequent impressions were largely positive.
The future of the Dragon Age franchise remains uncertain, leaving fans questioning whether BioWare will be given the opportunity to develop a sequel to The Veilguard.
