Fortnite's Item Shop Under Fire: Players Accuse Epic Games of Re-skinning Old Content
Fortnite players are voicing their displeasure with Epic Games' recent item shop offerings, criticizing the release of what many perceive as re-skinned versions of previously available cosmetics. The controversy centers on skins that were either previously free, bundled with PlayStation Plus subscriptions, or offered as free additions to existing skins. This perceived practice has led to accusations of greed directed at Epic Games. This criticism comes as Fortnite continues its expansion into the lucrative world of digital cosmetic items, a trend expected to continue throughout 2025.
Fortnite's evolution since its 2017 launch has seen a dramatic shift towards an extensive catalog of skins and customization options. While new cosmetics have always been a core element of the game, the sheer volume available today contrasts sharply with the earlier iterations. With Epic Games actively promoting new game modes and positioning Fortnite as a multifaceted platform, the emphasis on cosmetic items remains a key revenue driver. This naturally attracts criticism, and the current wave of complaints focuses on the perceived re-use of existing assets.
A recent Reddit post by user chark_uwu ignited a heated discussion, highlighting the current item shop rotation. Many players agree that several new skins are essentially re-skins of popular, previously released options. One player commented, "This is getting concerning. Five edit styles sold separately in a single week? Last year, these would've been free, part of PS+ packs, or added to the original skins." The post included images comparing the new paid skins to free additions from 2018-2024. Edit styles, traditionally free or unlocked in-game, are also a point of contention, with players accusing Epic of prioritizing profit over player satisfaction.
The "Greedy" Skins Accusation
Further fueling the outrage, players are criticizing the release of what they consider to be simple color variations of existing skins as entirely new purchases. This sentiment is echoed by another player who stated, "Releasing these reskins as new items is ridiculous." These complaints coincide with Epic Games' ongoing expansion into new cosmetic categories, such as the recently introduced "Kicks" footwear, which have also faced considerable backlash due to their cost.
Fortnite is currently in Chapter 6 Season 1, featuring a Japanese-themed update with new weapons and locations. Looking ahead to 2025, leaks suggest an upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong crossover, with a Godzilla skin already available in the current season. This demonstrates Epic Games' willingness to incorporate popular franchises and characters, but it does little to alleviate the ongoing concerns regarding the perceived exploitation of existing assets.
