Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that Max will revert to its previous name, HBO Max, starting this summer. This decision comes just two years after the platform was renamed from HBO Max to Max. HBO Max is renowned for hosting acclaimed series such as Game of Thrones, The White Lotus, The Sopranos, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, and The Penguin.
In announcing the name change, WBD highlighted the significant turnaround in their streaming business, achieving nearly $3 billion in profitability within two years. The company has also seen substantial global growth, adding 22 million subscribers over the past year and setting a target of over 150 million subscribers by the end of 2026. WBD attributes this success to a strategic focus on high-performing content, including HBO series, recent box-office hits, docuseries, select reality shows, and both Max and local originals, while de-emphasizing less engaging genres.
The rationale behind reverting to HBO Max is rooted in the strong association consumers have with the HBO brand, which is synonymous with premium, high-quality content that stands out in a crowded streaming market. WBD noted that current consumer trends favor quality over quantity, and HBO has a 50-year legacy of delivering such content.WBD's decision to reinstate the HBO brand in HBO Max is seen as a strategic move to further enhance the platform's growth and underscore its commitment to delivering unique and compelling content. This move reflects WBD's responsiveness to consumer data and insights, aiming to position the service for continued success.
David Zaslav, President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, emphasized that the rebranding aligns with the company's focus on quality programming, which has been key to the platform's growth. JB Perrette, President and CEO of Streaming, reinforced the company's commitment to distinctive content that caters to adults and families alike. Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, stated that the name HBO Max better reflects the current consumer proposition and reaffirms the platform's promise to deliver content that is uniquely valuable.
