Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved Baldur's Gate sequel.
A Playable Baldur's Gate Follow-Up Was Abandoned
Larian CEO Swen Vincke recently shared with PC Gamer that a follow-up to BG3, potentially Baldur's Gate 4, was in development and even reached a playable stage. While acknowledging it was a project fans would have enjoyed, Vincke explained the decision to abandon it stemmed from the team's desire to explore new creative avenues after years of working within the Dungeons & Dragons universe. The prospect of potentially spending another three years iterating on a similar project led to the decision to pursue original ideas instead.
High Morale Following the Decision
The shift away from the Baldur's Gate franchise has resulted in high morale within Larian Studios. Vincke stated that the team feels liberated by the decision to focus on fresh projects. This sentiment was echoed by senior product manager Tom Butler, who mentioned upcoming holidays and a focus on their next undisclosed projects, which Vincke anticipates will be their most ambitious yet.
Future Projects: Beyond Baldur's Gate and Divinity: Original Sin 3
While a Divinity: Original Sin sequel was previously mentioned as a possibility, Vincke clarified that their next project in that series will be unexpected and differ from fan expectations of a direct numbered sequel like Divinity: Original Sin 3.
Baldur's Gate 3's Future
Meanwhile, Baldur's Gate 3 players can anticipate a final major patch in Fall 2024, introducing mod support, cross-play, and new evil endings.
