The upcoming beat 'em up, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, is packed with nods to the franchise's rich history, including last year's reunion special, Once and Always. The game's main antagonist? Robo Rita! Announced at Summer Games Fest 2024, this retro-style brawler lets you team up with five players, battling enemies from the show's first three seasons, and even features 3D rail-shooter segments. Expect its release on PC and consoles later this year.
Power Rangers fans have experienced quite a ride recently. Following Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always and Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury, the show itself has gone quiet. Once and Always saw the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team reunite to stop a robotic Rita Repulsa from altering history. The special was filled with Easter eggs and touching moments, culminating in a tribute to late actors Thuy Trang and Jason David Frank.
Robo Rita's return from Once and Always as the main villain in Rita's Rewind is no coincidence. Digital Eclipse content editor Dan Amrich explained to Time Express that Robo Rita's attempt to erase the Power Rangers from existence in Once and Always provided a perfect in-universe link to connect various franchise elements.
A Rewind to Revenge: Facing Robo Rita
Amrich also detailed how Digital Eclipse pitched the game to Hasbro, who were looking to expand their popular franchises. Inspiration for Rita's Rewind came from classic 2D brawlers popular during the original MMPR's peak, with plenty of Easter eggs for long-time fans.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind is a loving tribute to the franchise, blending classic gameplay with modern lore. While the game's release is slated for later this year, fans can currently get a taste of the action through a recent crossover with ARK: Survival Ascended.
