Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action
Team Ninja declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja," a fitting announcement coinciding with their 30th anniversary. The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a surprise double feature: the reveal of Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Fumihiko Yasuda, Head of Team Ninja and producer of Ninja Gaiden 4, expressed his excitement and hopes fans embrace the series' evolution.
Developed by the powerhouse duo of Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 marks the series' return after a 13-year hiatus since Ninja Gaiden 3. This direct sequel promises the intensely challenging yet deeply satisfying gameplay the series is known for. The Xbox reveal is unsurprising, given the long-standing relationship between Team Ninja and Xbox, with past collaborations including exclusive Dead or Alive titles and Microsoft's publishing of Ninja Gaiden 2 for the Xbox 360.
A New Ninja Takes Center Stage

Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, on his journey to master his skills. PlatinumGames' Art Director, Tomoko Nishii, described Yakumo's design as aiming to create "someone who can stand alongside Ryu, the pinnacle of what it means to be a ninja."
Yuji Nakao, Producer and Director at PlatinumGames, explained the decision behind the new protagonist: "Since it’s been a while since the last game, we wanted a new hero to make the series more approachable for new players. Of course, we also wanted long-time fans to enjoy the game, so Ryu Hayabusa plays a significant role in the story, serving as a major challenge and growth milestone for Yakumo." Rest assured, Ryu Hayabusa remains a pivotal figure, playable and a formidable opponent for Yakumo.
Revitalized Combat

Expect the breakneck speed and brutal combat synonymous with the Ninja Gaiden franchise. Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style, complementing Yakumo's unique Raven Style. Masazaku Hirayama, Director at Team Ninja, assures fans that while distinct, both styles maintain the core Ninja Gaiden feel. Nakao highlights the collaboration between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, stating the game "stays true to the challenge and deep action that defines the Ninja Gaiden series, while incorporating the speed and dynamic expression of PlatinumGames."
The game is currently 70-80% complete, entering the polishing phase. Further details are forthcoming, and Yasuda emphasizes the game's action-focused core, promising hands-on opportunities for fans soon.
Fall 2025 Release and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black

Ninja Gaiden 4 launches Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title. Yasuda, in an Xbox Wire interview, highlighted Koei Tecmo and PlatinumGames' collaborative effort, stating that PlatinumGames' expertise was "ideal for working on NINJA GAIDEN."
Meanwhile, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 title, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, also included with Xbox Game Pass. This remake features additional playable characters (Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel), fulfilling fan requests from the 2021 Ninja Gaiden Master Collection release. Yasuda explains the remake as a way to "give players something to enjoy as they wait for the release of NINJA GAIDEN 4," assuring fans that it's "crafted to satisfy both those who played the original and newcomers discovering it as a current-generation action game."
