The development of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster spanned five years as the team dedicated themselves to faithfully recreating the classic titles. Discover how the project came to life and what it means for the future of the series.
Why Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Took Five Years to Develop
A Commitment to Authenticity

Creating a premium remaster true to the source material was a five-year endeavor for the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster team. In a March 4, 2025 interview with Dengeki Online, developers detailed their meticulous process to deliver a high-quality revival of the beloved series.
Initially announced in 2022 with a planned 2023 launch, the release was delayed to the current year. Takahiro Sakiyama, IP and Game Director for the Suikoden series, explained that during final debugging, the team recognized the need for a comprehensive review, leading to the postponement.
Game Director Tatsuya Ogushi elaborated, "Our approach was careful rather than bold. After assessing the situation and aligning with Sakiyama on quality standards, we identified numerous areas requiring substantial refinements that needed our full attention."
Laying the Foundation for a Revival

This remaster is more than a standalone project; it's the crucial first step in bringing the Suikoden franchise back to life. Series Producer Rui Naito shared the long-term vision, hinting at future endeavors for the IP.
Naito emphasized to the production team, "This project marks the first step in reviving the Suikoden IP, so we couldn't afford to falter. The core directive was to 'build a solid foundation.'" He added, "For Suikoden I & II HDR, I instructed Sakiyama and the team to create something robust. A rushed or incomplete release at this pivotal moment could halt the series' revival before it truly begins."
Genso Suikoden Live Unveils New Anime, Mobile Game, and More

The Genso Suikoden Live event on March 4, 2025, showcased Konami's expanded plans for the franchise. Naito views this as the second step in the IP's revival, though the full journey remains to be seen.
"To that end," Naito stated, "we have been refining Suikoden I & II HDR while maintaining a strong focus on the upcoming mobile title Suikoden STAR LEAP and the Suikoden II anime. Once we successfully deliver on these projects, we can begin planning the next phase."
Konami also announced Suikoden: The Anime, an adaptation of Suikoden II's story, produced in-house by the newly formed Konami Animation. Additionally, a new mobile game, Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP, was revealed. Teaser trailers for both projects have been released, though specific launch dates are yet to be confirmed.
With more projects and events in the pipeline, Konami is fully committed to returning the cherished Suikoden IP to the spotlight.
