The much-loved Suikoden series, absent for over a decade, is poised for a comeback. The upcoming HD remaster of the first two games aims to reignite fan enthusiasm and potentially pave the path for future entries in this cherished JRPG franchise.
Remastering Suikoden: A New Generation Awaits
The Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster is primed to revitalize this classic JRPG series. Director Tatsuya Ogushi and Lead Planner Takahiro Sakiyama expressed their hopes in a recent Famitsu interview (translated via Google) that this remaster will not only introduce Suikoden to a new audience but also rekindle the passion of longtime fans.
Ogushi, deeply connected to the series, voiced his respect for the late Yoshitaka Murayama, the series creator. He noted, "I’m sure Murayama would have wanted to be involved as well. When I told him I was going to participate in the remake of the illustrations, he was very envious."
Sakiyama highlighted his ambition to reintroduce Suikoden to a wider audience: "I really wanted to bring ‘Genso Suikoden’ back to the world, and now I can finally deliver it. I hope that the IP ‘Genso Suikoden’ will continue to expand from here into the future." Sakiyama, who directed Suikoden V, is a relative newcomer to the franchise.
Enhanced Experience: A Look at the Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster
Based on the 2006 Japan-exclusive PlayStation Portable collection, Genso Suikoden 1 & 2, this remaster brings enhanced visuals and gameplay to modern platforms.
The remaster boasts significantly improved HD background illustrations, creating more immersive and detailed environments. Expect stunning visuals, from the grandeur of Gregminster's castles to the ravaged landscapes of Suikoden 2. While the original pixel art sprites are refined, their core aesthetic remains intact.
A new Gallery, accessible from the title screen, showcases the game's music and cutscenes, alongside an event viewer for revisiting key moments.
Addressing Past Issues and Modernizing Content
The remaster rectifies issues present in the PSP release. The infamous, prematurely shortened Luca Blight cutscene from Suikoden 2 is fully restored.
Furthermore, certain dialogues have been updated to meet modern sensibilities. For instance, Richmond's smoking habit in Suikoden 2 has been removed to reflect Japan's nationwide smoking bans.
Launch and Availability
The Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster is slated for release on March 6, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
