Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!
Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 has seen an explosive surge in mod adoption following the release of Patch 7. The sheer volume of community-created content is staggering.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke himself tweeted about the impressive uptake: over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th launch. This figure was quickly eclipsed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over 3 million installs and counting.
This incredible response is fueled by Patch 7's significant additions, including new evil endings, improved split-screen, and—crucially—Larian's official Mod Manager. This in-game tool simplifies mod browsing, installation, and management.
The existing modding tools, available separately via Steam, empower creators to craft their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. Modders can also incorporate custom scripts, debug their work, and publish directly from the toolkit.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
As reported by PC Gamer, a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously restricted editor features. While Larian initially limited access to its development tools ("We're a game development company, not a tools company," Vincke stated previously to PC Gamer), the community's ingenuity is evident.
Larian is actively developing cross-platform modding support, a significant undertaking given the need for compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will come first, followed by consoles after addressing potential issues and navigating platform submission processes.
Beyond the modding boom, Patch 7 boasts a wealth of improvements: enhanced UI, new animations, expanded dialogue, and extensive bug fixes and performance optimizations. With further updates planned, Larian's commitment to community engagement and cross-platform modding is clear.
