Bungie Addresses Voice Acting Changes in Destiny 2
The developers at Bungie have confirmed they're currently working to bring back beloved character voices in Destiny 2, including Vanguard leader Ikora Rey. This comes after players noticed significant vocal differences during The Edge of Fate expansion.
A Case of Mistaken Identity?
When Year of Prophecy's first expansion launched, sharp-eared Guardians quickly spotted something unusual - Ikora Rey sounded suspiciously like Savathun from The Witch Queen expansion. This wasn't players' imagination playing tricks - both characters were currently being voiced by actress Debra Wilson.
While Bungie had warned players about upcoming voice cast changes back in May, yesterday's announcement clarified the situation further. The studio explained that while original actors were unavailable for The Edge of Fate recording sessions, they're now re-recording affected characters' dialogue.
When Can Players Expect Changes?
Currently, there's no concrete timeline for when players will hear familiar voices return to the Tower. Bungie states they're targeting a "future update" to implement these changes. In the meantime, players may continue encountering temporary voice replacements or even silent characters during key moments.
The SAG-AFTRA Connection
Though never directly mentioned in Bungie's statement, timing suggests the recent resolution of SAG-AFTRA's strike regarding AI protections may have played a role. The 2024 performer strike, which saw overwhelming 98% member support, had involved major gaming companies failing to reach agreements on AI usage protections.
Destiny 2's Ambitious Future Plans
Beyond these vocal changes, Bungie continues moving forward with Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy roadmap. This includes:
- Two paid expansions
- Major seasonal updates
- Core gameplay improvements
Year of Prophecy marks Destiny's first content year featuring four major updates, with half being available free to all players. These developments come alongside Bungie's work on other projects, most notably their postponed Marathon reboot.
The studio recently postponed Marathon indefinitely following player feedback, though development continues on Destiny 2's evolving universe. Players curious about what's next can check out Bungie's official Year of Prophecy roadmap.
