Take-Two Interactive has made it clear that they're committed to supporting legacy titles as long as there's a demand from players. This statement has sparked curiosity and hope among fans regarding the future of GTA Online, especially with the upcoming launch of GTA 6. Let's dive deeper into what this might mean for the beloved online component of the Grand Theft Auto series.
GTA Online Might Survive After GTA 6's Launch
Take-Two Will Support GTA Online if There's Demand
The future of GTA Online post-GTA 6 is a hot topic among fans. While Rockstar Games hasn't provided a definitive answer, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, offered some insight during an IGN interview on February 14, 2025. Zelnick refrained from discussing specific projects but provided a general perspective on legacy titles. He stated, "I'm going to speak theoretically only because I'm not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn't been made. But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles."
To illustrate this point, Zelnick referenced NBA 2K Online, which was launched in China in 2012, followed by a sequel in 2017. Despite the release of the sequel, the original game was not discontinued because of its massive audience. Zelnick emphasized, "So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them." This suggests that as long as players continue to engage with GTA Online, Rockstar and Take-Two might keep it running even after GTA 6's launch. Given GTA Online's significant financial success over the past decade, it seems unlikely that they would abandon this lucrative game.
Rockstar Games May Create a Platform like Roblox and Fortnite for GTA 6
Adding to the excitement, there are reports that Rockstar is planning to incorporate user-generated content (UGC) into GTA 6's online version, according to Digiday on February 17, 2025. This move could position GTA 6's online component similarly to popular platforms like Roblox and Fortnite, where players can create and share their own unique experiences.
Digiday reported that "Rockstar Games has been in discussions with top Roblox and Fortnite creators, as well as dedicated GTA content creators, about the potential to create custom experiences inside the upcoming game." This would allow players to modify the game's assets and environment, enhancing the visual sandbox experience through UGC.
The inclusion of UGC could not only attract a broader audience through content creators and modders but also generate additional revenue for Rockstar and Take-Two through virtual item sales or other revenue programs. Although Rockstar has not yet responded to Digiday's inquiries, the potential for such a feature is generating significant buzz.
Despite being a 14-year-old game, GTA 5 and its online component remain the third most-watched game on Twitch. With plans to integrate modders and content creators into GTA 6's online version, the game is poised to create even more excitement and engagement across various platforms.
