Jar of Sparks, NetEase's Studio, Pauses Development on Debut Title; Seeks New Publisher
Jerry Hook, former design lead for Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, a NetEase subsidiary, has temporarily halted development on its inaugural game project. The studio, established in 2022, is actively searching for a new publishing partner to realize its creative vision for a next-generation narrative-driven action game.
While NetEase, a global gaming giant, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals, Jar of Sparks' project has encountered unforeseen challenges. Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause and the studio's commitment to finding new roles for its team members. The post emphasized the team's bold approach and innovative efforts in creating a unique gaming experience.
This isn't NetEase's first collaboration with a prominent industry veteran. In 2022, former Resident Evil producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi also established GPTRACK50 Studios under NetEase's umbrella.
The news follows a period of transition for Hook's previous franchise, Halo. Halo Infinite's post-launch support and the reception of the Paramount+ series have been less than stellar. However, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine suggest a potential resurgence for the franchise.
While Jar of Sparks' future remains uncertain pending the acquisition of a new publisher, the studio's commitment to its innovative vision and its team's dedication remain evident. The search for a new partner marks a significant step in the studio's journey, and the outcome will be closely watched by the gaming community.
