It was almost exactly one year ago that I walked into a meeting at the Game Developer’s Conference and was introduced to Jump Ship, a four-player sci-fi PvE shooter that masterfully blends elements from Sea of Thieves, Left 4 Dead, and FTL. I recently had the opportunity to play the latest build with some of the developers, and if any indie game is poised to make a big splash in an already packed year of releases, Jump Ship is my top pick. As it approaches its Early Access launch this Summer, the game is more polished and enjoyable than ever.
If you're not yet familiar with Jump Ship, it's a non-grindy space adventure designed for up to four players. Notably, the team at Keepsake Games is committed to enhancing the solo experience, allowing players to enjoy the game as a single-player adventure with narratively driven AI assistants. You get a taste of this in the Prologue, which serves as both a tutorial and a lore-builder, introducing you to gameplay mechanics like shooting, flying in your space suit, and ship combat.

Jump Ship now boasts a compelling narrative that complements its core PvE gameplay. A malicious virus has infected machines across the galaxy, and it's up to you and your fellow Atirans to uncover its source at the galaxy's heart and stop it. You'll navigate procedurally generated mission chains in each sector to reach your goal, with missions ranging from 10 minutes to an hour. The Jump Map's color-coded branching choices help you gauge the level of danger and potential rewards you'll face.
Assisting you is Iris, a non-infected AI introduced in the Prologue, who acts as a narrator during your missions. This adds a welcome structure to the game's solid foundation. The Hangar serves as your base of operations, where you can spend in-game currency on outfit customization, explore the Galaxy Map, and even play soccer during downtime.
The core four-player gameplay is a blast! Missions rarely go as planned; your ship might be attacked en route, requiring one player to pilot and use the pilot's chair weapons while another operates the ship's 360-degree cannon. Meanwhile, the remaining players can be mag-booted to the hull, shooting at passing ships. If the ship is damaged, someone must rush inside, grab a fire extinguisher, and crawl through vents to douse the flames—essential for keeping the ship's amenities, like the pineapple pizza-maker, in working order!

Once you reach your destination, all four players disembark and navigate the structure housing your target loot. You'll face relentless, hostile robots, making teamwork crucial at every turn. Your grappling hook speeds up movement both on the ground and in space, and once you secure the loot, one player must transport it back to the ship while the others provide cover.
Both my demo last year and the recent one were brief, highlighting Jump Ship's ability to deliver fun in short bursts without demanding too much time. However, I haven't yet experienced enough of the larger mission structure and the variety of procedurally generated content to fully assess its replayability. Nevertheless, everything I've seen so far points to Jump Ship being a potential hit. With all the right ingredients, it's poised to become something truly special, and I eagerly anticipate playing more.
