Nintendo subpoenas Discord in Pokemon leak probe

Author : Layla Update:Sep 16,2025

Nintendo is seeking a court subpoena in California that would compel Discord to reveal personal details about the individual responsible for last year's massive Pokémon data breach, commonly referred to as the "FreakLeak" or "TeraLeak" incident.

Legal documents reviewed by Polygon indicate Nintendo is petitioning the court to require Discord to disclose the real name, physical address, contact number, and email associated with a user account named "GameFreakOUT." This individual allegedly shared copyrighted Pokémon assets including character artwork, game source code, and proprietary materials across Discord servers last October, sparking widespread online distribution.

While unconfirmed, evidence suggests the leaked materials originated from an August data breach that developer Game Freak publicly acknowledged in October. The company confirmed unauthorized access involving personal data of 2,606 current, former, and contracted staff members. Notably, leaked files surfaced online October 12, followed by Game Freak's statement on October 13 - though curiously dated October 10 - which focused solely on compromised personnel records without mentioning sensitive corporate materials.

The extensive leaks revealed multiple unannounced projects including canceled content, development builds, and production documentation. Most significantly, they prematurely exposed Pokémon Champions - a battle-focused spinoff later officially confirmed in February - along with accurate details about Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The breach additionally contained speculative information about future Pokémon generations, Nintendo DS game source codes, internal meeting notes, and removed narrative elements from Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

While Nintendo hasn't yet initiated legal proceedings, this subpoena request signals potential litigation targeting the leaker's identity. The company maintains an aggressive legal posture regarding intellectual property violations, suggesting potential legal action if California courts approve the information request.
