Team Ninja has officially unveiled Nioh 3 during Sony’s State of Play presentation, delivering long-awaited news to fans of the intense action RPG series. The game is set to launch in early 2026 and promises a fresh evolution in gameplay while staying true to its brutal roots.
The debut trailer showcased expansive open fields for players to traverse, offering a new level of exploration within the dark, yokai-infested world. More notably, Nioh 3 introduces two distinct combat styles: Samurai and Ninja, both playable and switchable at any time during the adventure.
A playable demo is already live today, giving fans their first hands-on experience with the next chapter in the franchise.
Here's the official description from the PlayStation Blog:In Nioh 3, players take on the role of a young warrior destined to become the next Shogun—though his motivations for waging war against yokai remain mysterious… for now. What we do know is that the battle system has evolved with the introduction of two unique fighting styles: Samurai and Ninja.
The Samurai style delivers a familiar experience for veterans of the series, enriched by new mechanics such as Arts Proficiency, which boosts martial arts power, and Deflect, allowing precise last-second blocks that lead to high-stakes, face-to-face duels.
Meanwhile, the Ninja style emphasizes speed and agility, enabling quick dodges, aerial maneuvers, and tactical use of Ninjitsu techniques tailored to battlefield conditions. Techniques like Mist, which creates a clone after an attack, and Evade, used to narrowly escape enemy strikes, empower players to outmaneuver foes and strike with deadly precision from behind.
With real-time switching between styles, players can tailor their approach based on personal preference or situational demands. Whether seamlessly blending both styles or sticking to one depending on enemy types and stage design, each player’s journey through the story—shaped by strength, swiftness, and cunning—will be unique.
Beyond the dynamic combat, Nioh 3 also introduces expansive open fields, enhancing the sense of freedom without compromising the signature tension of the series. Encounter powerful yokai in unexpected places, uncover secrets buried within eerie villages, and face the brutal trials of The Crucible. Traverse hostile, cursed landscapes filled with danger and discovery, where survival is never guaranteed.
For fans of the series, this marks a triumphant return. At IGN, we've always held the Nioh franchise in high regard. We awarded the original Nioh a 9.6/10, calling it "an epic, unforgettable adventure carried by a fierce combat system that cleverly balances style and strategy." Nioh 2 earned a 9/10, praised for its deep systems and challenging gameplay despite its complexity.
Since the 2020 release of Nioh 2, Team Ninja has remained active with titles like Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Rise of the Rōnin, and the highly anticipated Ninja Gaiden 4. But with Nioh 3, they’re returning to what made us fall in love with their brand of punishing action-adventure gameplay.
