Bethesda has officially stated that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered does not include support for official mods. However, this hasn't deterred the passionate fanbase, as dedicated enthusiasts have already released a variety of unofficial mods. Just hours after Bethesda and Virtuos unveiled their reimagined version of Oblivion for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, a selection of community-created mods surfaced on the popular platform, Nexus Mods.
These initial mods primarily offer minor customization options, yet they underscore the unwavering dedication of The Elder Scrolls modding community. At the time of writing, an impressive total of 22 mods are available on the site. The first mod to be released enables PC users to customize their desktop by swapping the default Oblivion Remastered shortcut icon with one of two images featuring the game's notorious Adoring Fan. Other mods allow players to bypass the introductory Bethesda and Virtuos logo screens, while some, such as a mod that adjusts the Wizard’s Fury spell and another that eliminates the in-game compass, are already enhancing gameplay customization.
Despite Bethesda's usual encouragement of modding in their games, they confirmed that Oblivion Remastered would not support official mods, a detail shared in the FAQ section on their website. Nevertheless, the early wave of mods demonstrates the community's determination to continue modding the game. Nexus Mods user GodschildGaming, for instance, released an Iron Longsword damage mod to illustrate that modding is still feasible.
"This is just to prove modding is possible," GodschildGaming stated in the mod's description. "Bethesda says no mod support, I say false. It really is Unreal slapped on top of Oblivion, the data folder is nested in a lot more folders but same concept."
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered was released today, marking 19 years since the original game's debut, and is available on PC and consoles. As more players dive into the game in the coming weeks and months, the modding community is expected to grow, offering increasingly diverse and innovative ways to personalize the gaming experience. While awaiting further mod releases, you can explore why some players believe this release leans more towards a remake than a remaster and the reasoning behind Bethesda's choice of the "Remastered" label.
