Since its early access launch in January 2024, Palworld has captivated over 32 million players across all platforms. This crafting and survival game, playfully dubbed “Pokémon with guns,” achieved this milestone on PC via Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation 5.
Expressing gratitude, Pocketpair tweeted, “Thank you so much! As always, your support means the world to us!” John 'Bucky' Buckley, Pocketpair's Communications Director and Publishing Manager, added, “We will continue to work hard to make Palworld year 2 even better!”
Palworld debuted on Steam for $30 and was simultaneously available on Game Pass for Xbox and PC, shattering sales and concurrent player records. The game's massive success overwhelmed Pocketpair, with CEO Takuro Mizobe admitting the company struggled to manage the influx of profits. Seizing the opportunity, Pocketpair quickly signed a deal with Sony to establish Palworld Entertainment, aimed at expanding the IP and launching the game on PS5.
While Pocketpair diligently works on updating Palworld, a looming patent lawsuit with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company casts a shadow over their efforts. Following Palworld’s launch, comparisons between Palworld's Pals and Pokémon led to accusations of design plagiarism. Instead of pursuing a copyright infringement lawsuit, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company opted for a patent lawsuit, seeking 5 million yen (approximately $32,846) each, plus late payment damages and an injunction to block Palworld’s release.
In November, Pocketpair acknowledged being sued over three Japan-based patents related to catching Pokémon in a virtual field. Palworld features a similar mechanic with the Pal Sphere, akin to the one in the 2022 Nintendo Switch exclusive, Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Recent changes in how players summon Pals have sparked speculation that these adjustments were made in response to the lawsuit. Patent experts view the lawsuit as evidence of the competitive threat Palworld poses. Pocketpair has committed to defending their position in court, stating, “We will continue to assert our position in this case through future legal proceedings.”
Despite these challenges, Pocketpair remains focused on enhancing Palworld, releasing significant updates and even forging collaborations with other major video games, such as a crossover with Terraria.
