Sega's Risk-Taking Approach Fuels RGG Studio's Ambitious Projects

RGG Studio, the powerhouse behind the Like a Dragon series, is simultaneously developing multiple large-scale projects, including a brand-new IP. This ambitious undertaking is fueled by Sega's willingness to embrace risk and innovation, according to studio head and director Masayoshi Yokoyama.
Sega's Embrace of Risk and New IPs

With a new Like a Dragon title and a Virtua Fighter remake slated for 2025, the addition of two entirely new projects is a testament to RGG Studio's productivity and Sega's supportive environment. Yokoyama credits Sega's open acceptance of risk as the key factor.
In December 2024, RGG unveiled trailers for two distinct projects: Project Century, a new IP set in 1915 Japan, and a new Virtua Fighter project (separate from the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster). The scale and ambition of these projects highlight Sega's confidence in RGG Studio's capabilities. This reflects a relationship built on trust and a shared commitment to pushing boundaries.

"Sega accepts the possibility of failure," Yokoyama explained to Famitsu, as translated by Automaton Media. He highlighted this risk-taking approach as integral to Sega's identity, citing the creation of Shenmue as an example of this innovative spirit. Shenmue, an action-adventure series, originated from Sega's desire to explore new avenues with the Virtua Fighter IP, asking "What if we made ‘VF’ into an RPG?"
RGG Studio assures fans that the simultaneous development of these projects will not compromise quality, particularly for the Virtua Fighter series. With the support of original Virtua Fighter creator Yu Suzuki, Yokoyama, Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada, and the team are committed to delivering a high-quality, innovative experience.

Yamada added, "With the new ‘VF,’ we intend to create something innovative that a wide range of people will find ‘cool and interesting!’" Both Yokoyama and Yamada expressed their enthusiasm and encouraged fans to anticipate further updates on both projects.
