Phỏm Ta La - Tien Len Online is a beloved and traditional card game deeply ingrained in Vietnamese culture.
Phom, also known as Ta La or Tu Lo Kho, is a classic Vietnamese card game, especially popular in the northern regions. "Ta la" is the term used in the South, while "phom" is common in the North. In this game, players must strategically draw and discard cards to form combinations called "phoms" while minimizing the total points of unmatched cards in hand. Played with a standard 52-card deck, its diverse strategies make it exceptionally engaging. It's a staple game for family gatherings and holidays, providing endless entertainment.
Key Terms in Phom / Ta La
- Phom: A valid set of 3 or more cards of the same suit in sequence, or 3/4 cards of the same rank.
- Rummy/Junk Cards: Unmatched cards not part of any phom.
- Ù: When a player forms 3 phoms and has no junk cards, resulting in an instant win.
- Stomach/Stock: The leftover pile of cards after the initial deal, placed face-down.
- Mom (Móm): When a game ends and a player has failed to form any phom.
- Taking the Peg: On the final turn, playing a junk card that another player picks up.
- Sending: On the final turn, if your discarded card can be added to another player's exposed phom, you may "send" it, and it won't count against your score.
- Compensation: On the final turn, if a player "takes the peg" and then another player immediately goes Ù, the peg-taker receives compensation. The subsequent player who takes a peg must pay for the first peg-taker.
+ Additionally, if a player draws 3 consecutive cards from the stock, it is also considered compensation.
- Replay (Đền): After discarding, if another player can use that card, the turn passes to them, and you must take an extra turn.
How to Play Phom - Ta La
- A game requires 2 to 4 players. Each player receives 9 cards, except the dealer (or previous winner) who gets 10. The remaining cards form the "Stud" or stock pile placed face-down in the center.
- Play proceeds counter-clockwise, starting with the player holding 10 cards.
- Gameplay:
+ The first player discards any card. The next player may pick it up if it helps complete a phom; otherwise, they draw one card from the stock.
+ After picking up or drawing, that player discards one card, and the turn passes to the next player.
=> The round continues in this pattern.
- The game ends when a player declares Ù. If no one does, it ends after 4 rounds, and the points from junk cards determine the winner.
- Final Turn: The player must expose all their phoms, send any sendable cards to others' phoms, then make a final discard. Remaining junk cards are counted for points.
Scoring for junk cards when no one goes Ù:
+ The player with the lowest total score wins.
+ Aces, Jacks, Queens, and Kings are worth 1, 11, 12, and 13 points respectively. Numbered cards equal their face value.
+ Tie-breaker: The player who exposed their cards first wins.
- Final Point Calculation:
+ 1st Place: +6 points
+ 2nd Place: -1 point
+ 3rd Place: -2 points
+ 4th Place: -3 points
+ Player who took a peg: -4 points
+ Player whose peg was taken: +4 points
+ Player going Ù (or Ù trắng/Ù khan): +15 points (each opponent loses 5 points)
+ Player who is "Burned": Loses 4 points to the winner.
