Hyper Light Breaker is a game shrouded in mystery, where players gradually unravel its mechanics, enhancing the game's allure. Among these mechanics, the lock-on system stands out as a crucial targeting feature that can significantly affect your gameplay experience.

While locking onto an enemy helps maintain focus, it's not always the best strategy. In Hyper Light Breaker, the lock-on mechanic is most effective in specific one-on-one scenarios. This guide will walk you through how to target enemies and provide insights on when to utilize the lock-on versus the default free camera mode in this engaging Synthwave roguelite.

How To Target Enemies In Hyper Light Breaker

To target an enemy in Hyper Light Breaker, simply center your view on them and press the right analog stick (R3) on your controller. The game should automatically identify the correct target, even if it's within a large group of enemies. Upon locking on, your view will zoom slightly, and a reticle will encircle your chosen target.

It's worth noting that you don't need a direct line of sight to lock onto an enemy. As long as they're visible on your screen and within range, you can engage the lock-on feature.

When you lock on, the game adjusts your character's movement to keep the camera focused on the target, causing your movements to orbit around them. This can be disorienting, especially with fast-moving enemies, as the camera's perspective shifts rapidly, potentially altering your movement inputs mid-action.

To switch targets while locked on, simply move the right analog stick left or right. The reticle will jump to the nearest enemy within range. To disengage the lock-on and revert to the default third-person camera mode, press the right analog stick again. You can customize this control in the game's settings. Additionally, if you move too far from your target, the lock-on will automatically disengage.

When Should I Lock On vs Use Free Cam?

The lock-on feature is advantageous in certain scenarios but can be restrictive and risky in others. It's best to use lock-on during one-on-one encounters, such as against bosses or formidable enemies with yellow health bars, but only after clearing out all other nearby threats.

Locking on focuses your camera solely on one target, making you vulnerable to attacks from other enemies in your blind spots and complicating group combat.

For most of the game, the free camera mode is more beneficial. When facing multiple or weaker enemies that you can dispatch quickly, there's little need to lock on, as it can limit your awareness and responsiveness to surrounding threats.

However, when confronting a mini-boss or boss after clearing out lesser enemies, locking on can help keep the target centered on your screen. If additional enemies appear, disengage the lock-on to manage them, then re-engage to focus on the boss once they're alone.

For instance, during Extraction phases, you'll encounter waves of regular enemies followed by a mini-boss. It's advisable to use free cam until you've cleared the regular enemies, then lock onto the mini-boss to concentrate your efforts without distractions.
