Blizzard Entertainment has revealed its 2025 roadmap for the Overwatch 2 Stadium mode, outlining upcoming heroes and features for Season 17, Season 18, Season 19, and later.
The development team behind the acclaimed hero shooter provided a detailed look at the mode's past, present, and future in a Director's Take blog post from game director Aaron Keller. This includes an unexpected summer roadmap released just over a week after the mode's launch, along with insights into its origins and early performance.
Stadium Welcomes 7 New Heroes This Summer
The Stadium expansion continues with new Damage hero Freja joining the limited roster in the Season 16 mid-season update. However, the major content infusion arrives in June with Season 17, introducing Junkrat, Sigma, and Zenyatta as playable heroes alongside the Esperança Push map and Samoa Control map.
This season will also enhance the Stadium experience with features like Unranked Crossplay, new all-star rewards, custom games, additional example builds, and the ability to save and share builds. Whether all content launches simultaneously at Season 17's start or rolls out progressively remains unconfirmed.
Season 18 brings Overwatch's iconic gorilla scientist Winston into the fray, accompanied by Sojourn and Brigitte. The map selection grows with Route 66 and London, while a new Payload Race game mode debuts with two dedicated maps. This update also introduces Stadium trials and finally enables players to endorse their teammates.
Blizzard's transparent development approach confirms "multiple new heroes" will join Stadium each season—both existing Overwatch 2 characters and unrevealed newcomers. Looking ahead to Season 19 and beyond, players can anticipate a new China map, Draft Mode functionality, consumables, item system refinements, and more.

How Has Stadium Performed Since Launch?
The Overwatch 2 team shared compelling statistics showing player engagement with the new mode. Stadium has surpassed both Quick Play and Competitive modes, becoming Overwatch 2's most popular experience with 2.3 million matches played across 7.8 million hours during its launch week alone.
These figures represent more than double the engagement seen during Overwatch Classic's inaugural week. Notable statistics reveal Lucio boasts both the highest win rate and lowest selection rate, while players have spent 900 billion Stadium Cash acquiring 206 million items for their builds.
Keller's Director's Take also addressed key development details, notably confirming Stadium entered development before Overwatch 2's initial release. While previously hinted, this clarification should dispel persistent fan theories that the mode was created specifically to compete with Marvel Rivals, which launched in December 2024.
Keller committed to maintaining transparent communication, promising additional Stadium insights in another Director's Take next week. He simultaneously confirmed that despite Stadium's massive popularity, Blizzard remains dedicated to supporting core experiences including standard Quick Play and Competitive modes.
"Before concluding, I want to reaffirm the team's commitment to Overwatch's Core modes," Keller stated. "We continue investing the same level of time, energy and passion into these experiences as always. Stadium isn't diverting resources—it's providing new opportunities to deliver Overwatch in fresh, exciting ways.
"We're eager for players to experience upcoming content, particularly Season 18. It's going to be incredible! Enjoy Stadium and, as always, let's work together to create an outstanding game."
Overwatch 2 introduced Stadium with last week's Season 16 launch. The mode represents part of Blizzard's broader strategy to revitalize its player community, beginning with February's comprehensive Spotlight presentation. This initiative has already restored loot boxes and improved Steam ratings as players celebrate what many consider the most compelling Overwatch experience in recent years.
