Chess Makes its Esports Debut at the 2025 Esports World Cup!
The ancient game of chess is making headlines as a newly added esport to the 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC), the world's premier gaming and esports festival. This unprecedented move, a result of a significant partnership between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF), will introduce chess to a vastly expanded audience.
The EWCF CEO, Ralf Reichert, hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," perfectly aligning with the EWC's mission to unite global gaming communities. The inclusion of chess promises an exciting new dimension to the tournament.
World champion and top-ranked player, GM Magnus Carlsen, will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a broader fanbase. He expressed his excitement about the opportunity to introduce chess to new audiences and inspire future generations of players.

Riyadh Showdown: A $1.5 Million Prize Pool
The EWC 2025, taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, boasts a staggering $1.5 million prize pool. To qualify, players must excel in the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 CCT performers, along with four "Last Chance Qualifier" winners, will compete for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC's inaugural chess competition.
A Modern Twist on a Classic Game
To enhance its appeal to esports enthusiasts, the 2025 CCT will feature a faster-paced format. Matches will utilize a 10-minute time control without increment, a departure from the traditional 90-minute format of world championships. Tiebreakers will be decided by a single Armageddon game.
Chess, with its roots in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has captivated generations. Its digital adaptation via platforms like Chess.com has broadened its reach, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Popular culture, including streaming platforms and shows like "The Queen's Gambit," has further propelled chess into the mainstream.
This official recognition as an esport is poised to attract a new wave of players and fans, solidifying chess's place in the dynamic world of competitive gaming.
