Mojang Rejects Minecraft 2: 'No Earth 2?'

Author : Dylan Update:May 17,2025

Minecraft celebrated its 15th anniversary last year, and despite entering its challenging teenage years, developer Mojang has no intentions of replacing it with a sequel. During a recent visit to the Stockholm studio, IGN inquired about the possibility of a sequel to the best-selling game of all time. Ingela Garneij, the executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, provided a humorous yet definitive response: “Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2.”

While a sequel like Minecraft 2.0 is not on the horizon, this does not mean the survival-crafting phenomenon will stop evolving. In fact, Mojang's plans extend far into the future, with the goal of at least doubling the game's current lifespan.

Play“We've existed for 15 years,” stated Garneij. “We want to exist at least 15 years more, so Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director] and I work as a team. We set the vision and strategy for our game, considering what we can do beyond that.”

This ambition is driven by Mojang's desire to innovate and build upon their established foundations. However, Garneij acknowledged that these foundations are aging, and while there are no plans for an engine overhaul, implementing new content, such as the recently announced Vibrant Visuals graphics update, does take time.

“I think the age of the game is a challenge," Garneij explained. "It's a 15-year-old platform, using 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense. New games with newer engines can run much faster. So, I would say the technology and our age are our biggest challenges.”

Despite these challenges, Minecraft remains one of the world's most popular games and shows no signs of slowing down. Additionally, there are no plans for Minecraft to transition to a free-to-play model or to incorporate generative AI technology. So, while you won't be playing Minecraft 2 anytime soon—not on this Earth, anyway—Minecraft's future remains bright and full of potential.
