As Nintendo prepares for its Switch 2 era, the company revealed plans to streamline development timelines for certain projects to mitigate rising production risks. President Shuntaro Furukawa addressed investors about growing financial pressures in modern game development.
The Rising Costs of Game Development
Speaking during a recent investors Q&A, Furukawa highlighted how expanding project scopes and higher quality standards continue driving development budgets upward. This upward trend creates greater financial risks for the traditionally unpredictable gaming industry.
"Recent game software development has become larger in scale and longer in duration, resulting in higher development costs," Furukawa explained. "The game business has always been a high-risk business, and we recognize that rising development costs are increasing that risk."
Balancing Quality and Affordability
The Switch 2 launched alongside Mario Kart World, Nintendo's first $80 game, though Furukawa emphasized this pricing represents specific premium offerings rather than a new standard. The company maintains flexible pricing across its portfolio, from $10 mini-game collections to $70 blockbuster titles.
"We're investigating ways to continue delivering innovative experiences while keeping budgets manageable and prices accessible," Furukawa noted, referencing Nintendo's commitment to maintaining its signature creative spirit without compromising affordability.

Nintendo's leadership sees controlled-scope projects with accelerated timelines as a potential solution without sacrificing quality. "Our teams are exploring methods to preserve our creative approach despite industry challenges," Furukawa said.
