Rare's Everwild has been a topic of curiosity and speculation since its announcement over five years ago during Microsoft’s X019 presentation. Despite its absence from recent Xbox showcases and rumors of reboots, Xbox head Phil Spencer has confirmed that the project is still very much alive.
In a recent interview with XboxEra, Spencer expressed his excitement for Everwild, noting that he had visited Rare's UK studio to see the progress firsthand. Rare, known for their live service pirate adventure game Sea of Thieves, is actively working on Everwild. Spencer highlighted his enthusiasm not only for Everwild but also for other upcoming titles like State of Decay and the next game from Double Fine, led by Tim Schafer.
Spencer emphasized Microsoft's strategy of giving development teams ample time to perfect their games, even with a busy release schedule bolstered by the acquisitions of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. He mentioned an upcoming visit to The Coalition in Vancouver, further illustrating Microsoft's commitment to supporting its studios.
Everwild has faced its share of challenges, including the departure of creative director Simon Woodroffe in 2020 and rumors of a reboot, which Microsoft has denied. The project is now under the guidance of veteran designer Gregg Mayles, who has an impressive portfolio including Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Piñata, and Sea of Thieves.
While details about Everwild remain scarce, it was initially described as a third-person adventure game with elements of a god game. The last trailer, released in July 2020, promised "a unique and unforgettable experience" in a "natural and magical world." Given the extended development time, the game's concept may have evolved.
Microsoft's lineup of in-development games is extensive, including the Perfect Dark reboot, the next Halo, and Playground's new Fable game. Additionally, Bethesda is working on The Elder Scrolls 6, and Activision is preparing this year's Call of Duty. In the near future, id Software's Doom: The Dark Ages is set to launch in May, keeping fans eagerly awaiting updates on all these projects, including Everwild.
