Shuhei Yoshida, former president of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Worldwide Studios, recently disclosed the two most startling moments from his tenure at PlayStation—both caused by strategic moves from Nintendo and Xbox.
During an interview with MinnMax, Yoshida described the Xbox 360's year-early launch ahead of the PlayStation 3 as "very, very scary," since it gave Microsoft a significant head start in the next-generation console race. Players who waited for Sony's offering would be at a disadvantage.
The Monster Hunter 4 Exclusive That Stunned PlayStation
However, Yoshida said his biggest competitive shock came when Nintendo secured Monster Hunter 4 as a 3DS exclusive. "That was the biggest shock I had from an announcement from the competition," he admitted.
Monster Hunter had been a massive success on PlayStation Portable, with two exclusive titles. Yoshida had no prior indication that Nintendo had negotiated exclusivity for the next major installment. Adding to Sony's dismay, Nintendo simultaneously dropped the 3DS price by $100—underpricing the PlayStation Vita.
"After launch, both Nintendo 3DS and Vita were $250, but they dropped $100," Yoshida recalled. "I was like, 'Oh my god.' And then they announced the biggest game... The biggest game on PSP was Monster Hunter. And that game was going to release on Nintendo 3DS exclusively. I was like, 'Oh no.' That was the biggest shock."
Reflections from a PlayStation Legend
Yoshida retired in January after over 30 years with Sony, where he became one of PlayStation's most recognizable figures. Now free from corporate constraints, he has begun sharing previously untold industry insights—including his reservations about Sony's live-service strategy and the unlikelihood of a Bloodborne remake or sequel.
