Bethesda Clarifies: No Remake Planned for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Author : Jacob Update:May 24,2025

Bethesda Game Studios has recently addressed the classification of Virtuos' newly released The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, explaining why it's not labeled as a remake. In a detailed post on X/Twitter, the studio behind the iconic fantasy RPG series outlined its definition of a remaster and the rationale behind their chosen approach. Bethesda expressed gratitude to both new players and returning fans, emphasizing that they "never wanted to remake it."

"We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology," Bethesda explained.

The clarification comes as fans experience Oblivion Remastered for the first time, with the game now available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The remaster introduces significant visual enhancements and gameplay tweaks, including the ability to sprint and a new level-up system that blends elements from the original Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

Despite the extensive changes, which some players feel transform the game into more of a remake, Bethesda remains steadfast in its classification. "We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it," the studio noted. "But most of all, we never wanted to change the core. It’s still a game from a previous era and should feel like one."

Bethesda hopes that both new and returning players will feel like they're experiencing the game anew when they step out of the Imperial sewer into the world of Cyrodiil. The studio's dedication to preserving the essence of the original while enhancing it with modern technology underscores their commitment to their fans and the legacy of The Elder Scrolls series.

For those diving into Oblivion Remastered, comprehensive resources are available, including an expansive Interactive Map, complete Walkthroughs for the Main Questline and every Guild Quest, guides on How to Build the Perfect Character, and a list of Things to Do First, ensuring players can fully enjoy their journey through this beloved world.
