Mario Kart World Developer Insights
Prototyping Began in 2017
Mario Kart World, the latest addition to the iconic racing series, is set to launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2. However, its roots trace back to 2017 when the developers were simultaneously working on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
In the latest edition of Nintendo’s Ask the Developer series released on May 21, the team behind Mario Kart World shared their journey. Producer Kosuke Yabuki revealed that after developing a prototype in March 2017, the project officially kicked off by year's end. Yabuki explained that having perfected the series' formula with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, they aimed to create something more expansive.
Yabuki also clarified why the game isn't titled Mario Kart 9, despite expectations. He noted, "Our goal was to go beyond merely adding new courses; we wanted to elevate the series to new heights. Hence, we opted for 'MARIO KART WORLD' from the early stages of development."
Shifting to Switch 2
Programming Director Kenta Sato shared that the transition to developing for the Switch 2 was considered in 2020. At that point, the developers had a preliminary idea of the next-gen Switch's capabilities, but actual development units were not available until later. "Until then, we had to rely on our best guesses," Sato remarked.
The team was keen on ensuring their vision could be realized within the new console's performance limits. Sato noted, "While the original Switch's performance was adequate for many game types, our ambitious world would have struggled to maintain a stable 60 fps."
Once they gained access to the Switch 2's specs, their concerns dissipated. Sato expressed excitement, stating, "I was thrilled to find we could surpass our initial ambitions."
The shift to Switch 2 also demanded higher quality assets. Art Director Masaaki Ishikawa mentioned the need for more detailed graphics. However, the team embraced the challenge, feeling relieved that they could now enrich the game's visuals, such as adding more detailed terrain and richer art.
Cow Being a Playable Character
A surprising delight for fans was the announcement that Cow would be a playable character for the first time. Previously, Cow was just a background element or occasional obstacle.
Ishikawa shared the amusing story behind this decision: "One of our designers sketched Cow racing, and it clicked instantly. It was a revelation that our course environments held untapped potential." He was pleasantly surprised by how naturally Cow fit into the game, opening possibilities for future inclusions of other NPCs.
Beyond Cow's addition, the developers have meticulously crafted various elements to create an interconnected world. The inclusion of diverse foods adds to the game's richness, while kart adjustments and dynamic track changes cater to different terrains.
With the excitement building, fans eagerly anticipate Mario's return in this expansive racing world. Nintendo is set to launch Mario Kart World as a flagship title for the Switch 2, reinforcing its commitment to delivering top-tier gaming experiences.
Mario Kart World is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2. Keep an eye on our updates for the latest news on this thrilling new game!
