Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’s Dondoko Island: A Minigame's Unexpected Expansion Through Asset Reuse
Dondoko Island: A Surprisingly Large Minigame
Clever Asset Management: The Key to Dondoko Island's Growth
Michiko Hatoyama, lead designer of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, recently revealed the secrets behind Dondoko Island's impressive scale, despite its minigame status. In an interview with Automaton, Hatoyama explained that the island's scope significantly expanded during development. Initially conceived as a smaller feature, the addition of numerous furniture recipes propelled Dondoko Island to its current size.
RGG Studio achieved this rapid expansion through efficient asset reuse. By repurposing existing assets from the Yakuza series, the team created individual furniture pieces "in a matter of minutes," a stark contrast to the days or even months typically required for new asset creation. This vast library of pre-existing assets allowed for the quick integration of a huge variety of furniture.
The decision to expand Dondoko Island and its furniture options stemmed from a desire to enhance player enjoyment. The extensive island and diverse furniture provide players with significant freedom and creative satisfaction in transforming the dilapidated island into a luxurious resort.
Released on January 25, 2024, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth received widespread acclaim. As the ninth mainline entry in the Yakuza series (excluding spin-offs), the game boasts a rich repository of assets, further supporting the studio's ability to create expansive content. Dondoko Island stands as a testament to RGG Studio's resourceful asset management, offering players a remarkably large and engaging minigame experience.
