Kevin Edwards, a former Genepool Software developer, shared previously unseen images and gameplay footage of a cancelled Iron Man game slated for a 2003 release. The game, tentatively titled "The Invincible Iron Man," was reportedly in development shortly after the studio's successful X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge.
Edwards' Twitter (X) post included the game's title screen, the Genepool Software logo, gameplay screenshots, and original Xbox footage showing the startup screen and a desert-based tutorial segment.
Activision's Decision to Cancel "The Invincible Iron Man"
Despite fan enthusiasm, Activision cancelled "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development began. Genepool Software subsequently closed, leaving the team unemployed. While Activision never publicly explained the cancellation, Edwards offered several possible reasons in response to online comments: delays to the Iron Man film, dissatisfaction with the game's quality, or possibly another developer being chosen for the project.
Commenters also noted Tony Stark's design, markedly different from the MCU portrayal. The game's design predates Robert Downey Jr.'s iconic performance by almost five years and more closely resembles the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version. Edwards confirmed the design was the artist's decision. He promised further gameplay footage, but at the time of writing, this has yet to be released.
