GTA 6 has been announced with a delay, and that’s a promising sign. Rockstar Games has a stellar reputation for prioritizing quality over speed, similar to Nintendo, setting a high bar in the industry. Their patience consistently pays off with exceptional releases.
I’ve been a fan of the GTA series since its early days, starting with chaotic LAN parties on PC. From the obscure (London 1969) to the iconic (GTA V), each game has offered unforgettable experiences. Thankfully, these titles are rarely early—and coincidentally, they’re almost always brilliant. Let’s revisit the delays in GTA history (and a couple of Red Dead titles).
Grand Theft Auto III
Following the tragic events of September 11, Rockstar temporarily paused development on GTA III. Marketing VP Terry Donovan explained the delay:
"Our decision is based on two factors: communication challenges in downtown Manhattan post-9/11 and a thorough review of our content and marketing materials. We must ensure our games align with the current climate. While reviewing the game, we found some contextual elements that no longer felt appropriate. We apologize for the delay, but rest assured, the final product will be incredible."
Even with minor changes, the delay proved wise. Releasing a game about blowing things up so soon after such a devastating event would have been insensitive and inappropriate.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Both Vice City and San Andreas saw minor delays—seven days for Vice City to meet demand and another week for San Andreas to refine gameplay. These small adjustments made a big difference in the final product.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Vice City Stories saw a two-week delay in North America and longer in Europe. Meanwhile, Chinatown Wars, widely regarded as one of the best portable entries, launched two months later than expected. Its late arrival didn’t hurt—it became a critical darling despite poor sales.
Grand Theft Auto IV
With new consoles and ambitious goals, GTA IV required additional time. Rockstar Leeds emphasized the need for perfection, pushing the game several months beyond its initial release date.
Grand Theft Auto V
The most anticipated game of its time initially aimed for a spring 2013 launch but ultimately released in September. Rockstar admitted the delay was necessary for polish, and the result speaks for itself—the game remains the highest-grossing console title ever.
Red Dead Redemption 2
In line with Rockstar’s tradition, RDR2 underwent two delays. The first came in spring 2017, and the second pushed the game to late 2018. Rockstar promised the extra time would enhance the final product, and they delivered a masterpiece.
