After experiencing setbacks like the cancellation of Life By You and the troubled launch of Cities: Skylines 2, Paradox Interactive has shared its strategy moving forward based on insights gained from player feedback.
Paradox Interactive Discusses Recent Game Cancellations and Delays
Players Have Higher Expectations, and Some Technical Challenges Are Difficult to Resolve

Mattias Lilja, CEO of Paradox Interactive, the publisher behind Cities: Skylines 2, and CCO Henrik Fahraeus, have discussed player sentiments regarding game launches. In a recent conversation with Rock Paper Shotgun at the company's Media Day, Lilja noted that players now hold "higher expectations" and are "less confident" that developers will address issues post-launch.
Learning from the challenging release of Cities: Skylines 2 last year, the publisher emphasized taking a more thorough approach to resolving in-game problems. They also believe that providing players with earlier access to games can help gather valuable feedback during development. Reflecting on Cities: Skylines 2, Fahraeus mentioned, "If we had involved players on a larger scale during testing, it would have made a difference." He added that moving forward, they aim for "greater transparency with players" before a game's official release.

In line with this approach, Paradox has decided to delay its jail management simulator, Prison Architect 2, indefinitely. Lilja stated, "We're quite confident that the gameplay in Prison Architect 2 is solid, but we encountered quality issues. To deliver the experience players deserve, we made the difficult decision to postpone its release." Regarding the recent cancellation of the life simulation game Life By You due to unmet expectations, Lilja clarified that the delay for Prison Architect 2 stems from not being "able to maintain the development pace we aimed for."
"The challenges with Prison Architect 2 are different from those that led to Life By You's cancellation," he explained. "It's more about us struggling to keep up with our intended timeline." He further noted that during peer reviews and user testing, they discovered some issues were "more complex to resolve than initially anticipated."
In the case of Prison Architect 2, Lilja emphasized that the problems are "primarily related to technical aspects rather than design." He added, "Our focus is on ensuring the technical stability required for a smooth launch." Acknowledging current player expectations, he mentioned, "We recognize that in today's market, with tighter budgets, players have higher standards and are less tolerant of post-release fixes."

According to the CEO, the gaming industry has become a "winner-takes-all environment," where players tend to abandon "most games" relatively quickly. He observed, "This trend has become more noticeable over the past couple of years, based on our own data and broader market observations."
Cities: Skylines 2 faced significant issues at launch, leading to widespread fan criticism and a joint apology from Paradox and developer Colossal Order, followed by plans for a "fan feedback summit." The game's first paid DLC was also delayed due to major performance problems. Meanwhile, Life By You was canceled earlier this year as further development wouldn't meet the standards expected by both Paradox and its community. Lilja admitted that some challenges were due to issues they "had not fully understood," taking responsibility by saying, "That's completely on us."
