GameStop's Silent Store Closures Spark Concern
GameStop is quietly shuttering numerous US stores, leaving both customers and employees surprised and disheartened. The closures represent a significant decline for the once-dominant retailer, with its physical footprint shrinking by almost a third. Social media platforms are buzzing with reports from affected customers and employees, painting a concerning picture of the company's future.
The world's largest physical retailer of new and used video games, GameStop boasts a history spanning over 44 years, originating as Babbage's. Launched in 1980 in a Dallas suburb with backing from Ross Perot, the company reached its zenith in 2015, boasting over 6,000 global locations and nearly $9 billion in annual sales. However, the past nine years have witnessed a dramatic downturn, largely attributed to the shift towards digital game sales. By February 2024, according to ScrapeHero, GameStop's physical store count had plummeted by roughly one-third, leaving approximately 3,000 stores in the US.
Following a December 2024 SEC filing hinting at further store closures, a wave of reports from both customers and employees flooded social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit. Many expressed dismay, like Twitter user @one-big-boss, who mourned the loss of a favorite location known for affordable games and consoles. He worried that this closure foreshadowed the fate of less profitable stores. Employee accounts also surfaced, with one Canadian worker citing "unrealistic targets" imposed by upper management as stores face evaluation.
The Ongoing Closure Trend
The recent spate of GameStop closures underscores the retailer's ongoing struggles. A March 2024 Reuters report predicted a grim outlook for GameStop, highlighting the closure of 287 stores in the preceding year, following a nearly 20% (approximately $432 million) revenue drop in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to 2022.
Over the years, numerous internal and external efforts have attempted to revive GameStop. As its customer base migrated online, the company experimented with diverse strategies, including expanding into video game-related merchandise and venturing into unrelated sectors like phone trade-ins and trading card grading. The 2021 influx of investment from Reddit's amateur investors, documented in Netflix's "Eat the Rich: The GameStop Saga" and the film "Dumb Money," provided a temporary lifeline.
