Argentine director Andy Muschietti, known for his work on the It remakes and The Flash, has provided a much-anticipated update on the Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. Sony Pictures initially announced the development of the live-action film in 2009, bringing on board the game’s director, Fumito Ueda. Before Muschietti, Chronicle director Josh Trank was set to helm the project but had to step away due to scheduling conflicts.
In addition to the Shadow of the Colossus adaptation, Sony unveiled a new slate of live-action films based on its popular games at CES 2025. This includes a Helldivers movie, despite comparisons to the 1997 film Starship Troopers, as well as a Horizon Zero Dawn movie and a Ghost of Tsushima animation.
During an interview on Radio TU’s La Baulera del Coso, Muschietti reassured fans that the Shadow of the Colossus film is far from abandoned. He acknowledged the lengthy development period, attributing delays to factors beyond personal interest, such as the game's popularity and the significant budget required. Muschietti praised Shadow of the Colossus as a "masterpiece," despite not being a "big gamer" himself, and confirmed he has played the game multiple times. He also mentioned favoring a specific script among the various versions developed.
Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation Gets Update From Director
Other projects have drawn inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus, notably Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2 in 2024, but Sony’s original remains a beloved classic. Ueda, the architect behind Shadow of the Colossus, has since founded his own studio, GenDesign, and announced a new sci-fi game at The Game Awards 2024, which reflects the same sense of isolation found in the 2005 epic. Despite the high-definition remakes concluding with the PlayStation 4 version in 2018, Shadow of the Colossus continues to inspire and its legacy is set to expand into live-action, aiming to captivate both dedicated fans and newcomers alike.
