Assassin's Creed Valhalla's extensive gameplay faced criticism, prompting Ubisoft to refine the experience for its upcoming title, Assassin's Creed: Shadows. The developers have addressed concerns regarding the game's length and overwhelming number of optional tasks.
Game director Charles Benoit stated that completing the main storyline of Shadows will take approximately 50 hours, while full completion, including exploration and side quests, is estimated at 100 hours. This contrasts with Valhalla's minimum 60-hour main story and potential 150-hour full completion. Ubisoft has prioritized a more balanced ratio of narrative content and optional activities, aiming for a less tedious yet richly detailed experience.
The goal is to cater to diverse player preferences. Players seeking extensive gameplay won't compromise on depth, while those focused on the narrative can complete the game without an excessive time commitment.
Director Jonathan Dumont highlighted the team's research trip to Japan, significantly influencing Shadows' development. The scale and realism of Japanese castles, mountainous landscapes, and dense forests profoundly impacted their approach. This led to a greater emphasis on realism and detail.
One key change involves world geography. Travel times between points of interest have increased, reflecting the vastness of the open world. However, this increased travel time is offset by significantly richer and more nuanced locations. Unlike Odyssey's densely packed points of interest, Shadows features a more expansive and natural world, with greater detail and immersion in each location. Dumont emphasized the significantly higher level of detail in Shadows, promising a truly immersive Japanese atmosphere.
