After a 15-year tenure at Sledgehammer Games, Call of Duty multiplayer creative director Greg Reisdorf has announced his departure. His contributions spanned numerous Call of Duty titles, beginning with Modern Warfare 3 (2011).
Reisdorf's impact is significant, encompassing the development of multiplayer for the recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, including its live seasonal content and modes. His journey with Sledgehammer Games began with the studio's inaugural title, Modern Warfare 3, released in 2011, just two years after the studio's founding in 2009. Over the years, Sledgehammer Games collaborated extensively with Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software on various Call of Duty installments, culminating in the 2024 release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and the ongoing success of Call of Duty: Warzone.
In a January 13th Twitter post, Reisdorf confirmed his departure on January 10th, reflecting on his career highlights. His early contributions to Modern Warfare 3 included the Scorched Earth campaign mission and a memorable sequence in the Blood Brothers mission featuring Soap on a gurney, which he described as a particularly fun and challenging experience.
Reisdorf's influence extended to the "boots on the ground" era of Call of Duty, shaping gameplay mechanics in Advanced Warfare, such as boost jumps, dodging, and tactical reloads. He also played a key role in designing unique weapon signatures, energy weapons, and multiplayer maps for the same title. However, he expressed some reservations about the "Pick 13" system, believing that killstreaks should be rewards separate from essential equipment selections.
His work on Call of Duty: WW2 involved addressing initial concerns about the game's weapon class restrictions, a decision he was pleased to see reversed post-launch. In Call of Duty: Vanguard, he focused on creating enjoyable, traditional three-lane maps, prioritizing fun gameplay over strict military realism.
Finally, Reisdorf detailed his involvement in the development of multiplayer maps for Modern Warfare 3 (2023), including the nostalgic recreation of classic Modern Warfare 2 maps with subtle additions like Shepherd's skull in Rust. As multiplayer creative director, he oversaw the creation of live seasonal modes, including Season 1's Snowfight and Infectious Holiday modes. His contributions to Modern Warfare 3 encompass over 20 modes throughout its post-launch support. Reisdorf's future plans remain within the gaming industry, as he expressed excitement for his next endeavor.
