Avowed, slated for release in 2025, promises a richly detailed experience, as revealed by its game director in a recent preview. The game's complexity and multiple endings are central to its design.
Avowed: A Complex World with Profound Choices
Navigating Political Intrigue in the Living Lands
Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed aims to provide players with constant opportunities to shape their character and experience. Game director Carrie Patel highlights the game's design philosophy: every decision, no matter how small, contributes to the overall narrative."It's about providing players with continuous opportunities to express and explore their character's inclinations," Patel explains. She emphasizes the importance of mindful gameplay, encouraging players to reflect on their engagement: "When am I most engaged? When am I curious? When does my interest wane? What keeps me invested?"
The choices in Avowed, and their consequences, are directly tied to exploration within Eora's intricate world, specifically the Living Lands, where political power is fiercely contested. "I've enjoyed weaving together the narratives that connect these worlds," Patel adds.
Players take on the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy, tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their own political ambitions. "Giving players depth to explore—that's what makes for meaningful roleplaying," Patel notes. "It's about who you want to be in this world, and how the game allows you to express that."
Beyond the deep RPG mechanics, Avowed features strategic combat blending magic, swords, and firearms. "The abilities and weapons you choose drastically alter each playthrough," Patel explains.
Furthermore, IGN confirmed the existence of numerous endings, each a unique combination of player choices. Patel clarifies, "We have a double-digit number of ending slides, and many different combinations are possible. As with any Obsidian game, your ending is a direct reflection of your choices throughout the game, shaped by the content you encounter and your actions within it."
